The Masaya Volcano National Park is a protected area located just 12 miles outside of Nicaragua’s capital city, Manague.
Masaya is an active volcano and one of the few places in the world where you can see lava flowing as well as feel, hear, and smell the power of the volcano.
Eruptions are frequent, with 2008 being a particularly active year and most recently in 2019 when a small explosion spewed ash as far as 4 miles away,
At night, visitors can peer over the edge to see the red molten lava lake at the bottom of the crater.
But nothing is more spectacular than daredevil nik wallenda's feat of crossing the 1800' crater on a 1" metal highwire, which was broadcast live on abc in 2020.
