The sleepy fishing village of Búzios was largely undiscovered until the 1960s when French icon Brigitte Bardot sought refuge from the paparazzi in nearby Rio de Janeiro.
Accompanied by her boyfriend, Brazilian musician Bob Zagury, Bardot fell in love with this tropical paradise over the course of her months-long respite. She recalls traipsing through the wild beaches and subsisting on fish, mangoes, and sunshine. Bardot is still a celebrity in Búzios today, with a seafront boardwalk named in her honor as well as a life-sized bronze statue!
Although Búzios has modernized since Bardot's days, it still holds a small-town charm and air of blissfulness. There are upscale resorts and top-rated restaurants, but the real draw is its numerous and widely varied beaches.
Búzios is a peninsula with 5 miles of coastline dotted with coves and secluded beaches. Each of its 26 beaches offer their own particular form of relaxation. There are incredible surfing waves in Geriba and strong winds in Manguinhos. Ferradura and Tartaruga have calm, clear waters, and there is unparalleled tranquility in Forno and Azedina. Finally, for those that enjoy shedding inhibitions, Olho de Boi offers a naturalist's paradise.
