The Caño Cristales, or Crystal Channel, is a river in the Serranía de la Macarena National Natural Park and one of the most impressive natural sites in Colombia.
Due to its striking colors, the Caño Cristales is sometimes referred to as the "River of Five Colors" or the "Liquid Rainbow.”
During the rainy season, from June to November, the bed of the river is colored with vibrant hues, most notably crimson but also with shades of yellow, pink, green, and blue. This is because the rocks are lined with a prehistoric aquatic plant called Macarenia Clavigera.
These plants attach to rocks where the river has a fast current and change color based on the amount of sunlight they receive. They start out green, but once exposed to sunlight, and throughout their peak exposure, change to yellow, orange, pink and crimson.
In order to preserve this natural phenomenom, visitors to Caño Cristales must be accompanied by a licensed guide.
