Serra Negra will exceed your expectations for a satisfying taste experience! It has balanced acidity and an intense body. It can be described as having a honey-like mouthfeel. Further sensory notes of sweetness, caramel, chocolate, and sugar cane are observed. Beyond that, this has been our go-to coffee for years and we got such a kick out of it that it inspired us to start our own coffee roasting company!

This coffee comes exclusively from our family’s farm situated near the town of Serra Negra in the Sao Paulo countryside. The region is known for its coffee production, and coffee is such a mainstay in the region that even the name Serra Negra translates to ‘Black Hills’, for the rolling hills covered in coffee plants as far as the eye can see.

The region is known for it’s mineral rich spring water which are used to irrigate the coffee plants.

These coffee beans (and the farm in which they come) are certified UTZ, which is a certification program for sustainable farming of coffee, tea, cocoa, and hazelnuts. The program is part of the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organization working to create a better future for people and nature.

Flavor notes: Sweet, caramel, chocolate, sugar cane, honey

Process: Natural

ABOUT SERRA NEGRA, BRAZIL

Serra Negra is a tiny town situated about 90 miles from Sao Paulo. It is in a region knows as Circuito das Aguas, and all boast mineral-rich natural spring water.  Windy hills surround the town center where natural springs disperse water from the source, right on the side of the road for any passerby to stop and fill up their jugs.

Serra Negra attracts a robust weekend tourist following mainly from the larger nearby cities of Sao Paulo and Campinas, and there are little artisan shops selling locally made, traditional sweets and embroidered clothing. There is a quaint main square that often has live music and is surrounded by lively traditional bars and restaurants. A touristic open air train, the Maria Fumaça (Smoke Maria in english) runs throughout the town and is a lively adventure. We have been blessed to enjoy many events here, from a 5k race as well as many Carnaval celebrations where kids run around in costume shooting off canisters of spray foam and throwing confetti.
